Michael Jackson was a surprise. Knew, of course, that Fawcett was ailing, and McMahon had been in bad health, but I was very surprised to learn of
Jackson's death. A bad week for the entertainment industry.

(MOD EDIT: Threads merged at this point.)
I know Mrs. Tame would never forgive me for not making a big deal about this, but I'm watching CNN right now and Michael Jackson died. Mrs. Tame is the huge fan in this household, but I generally liked his music too. And if he seemed a bit odd, I pretty much chalked it up to im not being able to handle the fame. I probably wouldn't have done much better. And now, of course, we'll never see his undoubtedly sterling portrayal of Agent Pendergast in the Relic remake ...

Been a bad week for entertainment deaths. I'm watching CNN right now. Wonder if Mrs. Tame's heard. She's got choir practice tonight so she may not
have heard yet. Of course if she turns on the radio at all on the way home ... I didn't know this topic existed when I posted a Michael death thread. Guess
I should go delete it.

I didn't know Ed McMahon died! No one told me!

... except that I'm not sure how to do it. Might not be possible.
I always thought the celebrities-dying-in-threes thing was a crock. It's so ill-defined. Is there some cutoff level of fame, below which one doesn't count? How would you measure that, anyway? And how long between the deaths before the time limit is up? People die all the time, both famous and non. Once someone dies who's famous enough to rate a headline, you just count backwards to find the previous two and there you go ... So if they really count as a Death Trio, does that imply some connection between the three? I'm trying to imagine a conversation between McMahon, Fawcett and Jackson ... |

1) God, you see pictures of him as a kid just starting out with the Jackson 5, sunny, irrepressible, and it just breaks your heart.
2) SALON has a most insightful post-mortem piece. My mother aptly noted that success/celebrity was all Michael Jackson knew--he never had a chance to have any kind of real life outside the fishbowl. (Which is why his later albums were progressively weaker--his talent and skill wasn't enough to cover up the fact his creative well was running dry and mega-success had fishbowled him in the worst way. Nor was it enough to help him heal--or outrun--his demons.) 3) I had always wondered why the insane plastic surgery, and finally heard a good reason tonight (via the author of the unauthorized MJ bio). Michael was trying to wipe out any physical resemblance to his father in the same way he was wiping out his father's failures as a musician and a dad. 4) And it's a hard call who had the worst rock 'n roll dad... Jackson, Brian Wilson...or Layne Staley. ************************************************ "When we are young and strong and proud, we all set out to do a great battle with life. I know it didn't happen within the same week, but what about David Carradine? Bill needs some love, too.

Michael Jackson's death is shocking, but at the same time it wasn't entirely surprising, sadly. Listening to clips of his last press conference when he made his announcement about the "final curtain call" and how he was adamant to let his fans know how much he loved them... it's a little foreboding in hindsight. Such finality in his words (and he looked particularly unwell). An undeniably gifted and tortured soul. I truly hope he's at peace. He never really grew up - he just could not, having been under such unbelievable pressure from such a young age, plus the abuse... it's amazing he was able to shine through in his music, but he did. I agree that when you see the stark contrast with his attractive youthful self (both boy and young man) versus what he had morphed into, it's heartbreaking. (No doubt even more so when you experienced his youth, whereas I only discovered him at about the time Thriller came out.) The whole horrific transformation used to be mind-boggling, but... >>I had always wondered why the insane plastic surgery, and finally heard a good reason tonight (via the author of the unauthorized MJ bio). Michael was trying to wipe out any physical resemblance to his father in the same way he was wiping out his father's failures as a musician and a dad. I think this must be true - and that it was actually a catalyst that propelled him into full-blown Body Dysmorphic Disorder. I really believe he suffered from that. Probably there are individuals who are predisposed to those types of syndromes, and given the hell he endured, it could certainly be a trigger if he was. It's a shame he didn't have the chance to have that final hurrah - I wonder if he was filled with excitement for his upcoming re-emergence, or trepidation... I also wonder what the autopsy will show. I guess we will know soon enough. I've had Thriller running through my head all night. Which is as it should be.

Carradine -- is the exact cause of his death still a bit ambiguous? There was a rumor also that Jeff Goldblum died today. I have no idea why, but thankfully
it was not true.
>>Guess I should go delete it. Oops, I saw yours first and responded too! No point in deleting it... I could merge the threads, though... The threads have been merged - hope that's agreeable to you both, SP and Stewart!

Michael Jackson was an extremely talented person, and a true artist. I don't say that about very many people. RIP, Michael.

I don't know why we'd have any objections, they are on the same topic, after all....
And I felt very sorry for MJ, post "Thriller". His life made me think of The Truman Show, only he never made it across the sea to the escape hatch. Well, maybe he has, now. It's so sad to see someone who's so hamstrung by his own success. "Every normal [person] must be

Co-worker just told me that not only do celebs die in 3's but it is as follows:
1 of old age (Ed McMahon) 1 of disease (Farrah) 1 suddenly (Michael). How creepy is that? I brought in my Thriller tape this morning and we played it before we opened. He was so talented. I wonder what is going to happen to his "children"? I use italics because I am not so sure they are biologically his. |

"Wait! I thought you said crossing the threads was dangerous?"
I think they merged rather nicely. Mrs. Tame was upset. Not surprising, considering Michael was her first pop star crush. While not a huge fan, I definitely respected the man's talent, and tried to take what seemed to be the message of songs like "Scream" and "Leave Me Alone" to heart and avoid spreading tabloid-style rumors about him. There was a nice remniscence about him on Mark Evanier's weblog ( http://www.newsfromme.com ). Evanier met him back in the '80s when asked to develop a cartoon series around Jackson. It never went anywhere because Jackson didn't really want to be a cartoon character. I notice in today's blog entries that Evanier has declared himself "King of Pop," because, as he puts it, "... the title was up for grabs." Apparently some have disputed the claim, but he says they're just jealous they didn't think of it first. I certainly wish *I'd* thought of it. Maybe if I support him as King he'll reward me with a Dukedom ... Anyway, it's a shame that we never really got to see Michael eventually break free from the shadow of his '80s success. It must really suck to hear people sum up your latest album as, "Pretty good, but not as good as Thriller," over and over again. |

Apparently the drama continues. All very weird, isn't it? And someone else died -- Karl Malden. I admit I am not familiar with him.

Karl Malden, another one of those one was almost sure had already passed away. As I've watched tons of old movies, I do remember him, too.
