I remember Pendergast, and a little of how psychotic his brother is/was (not as up on the series as I'd like to be.) I'm not sure I want to read about
any other member of that family. Though knowing me, I'd happily read it and having more sleeping problems then I did when I read Silence of the Lambs.

That was a good book. I plan to read it's sequel in the near future if I can. Reading about Pendergast's brother will definitely give you some sleeping
problems, though...

I am begining to wonder about dear old aunt cornelia the invillid...
Her latest... musings... so to speak... I think we will see some very interesting things from her in the near future.... "You see every drink of liquor you take kills a thousand brain cells. Now that doesn't much
matter 'cos we got billions more. And first the sadness cells die so you smile real big. And then the quiet cells go so you just say everything real loud
for no reason at all. That'ok, that's ok because the stupid cells go next, so everything you say is real smart. And finally, come the memory cells.
These are tough sons of bitches to kill."

It would be a trip if Aunt Cornelia outlived Pendergast. Talk about a shocker...

Hm...I find it interesting that dear Aunt Cornelia seems to have had a complete change of heart regarding who her favorite nephew is. There is a fairly large
gap between 'the other one' and 'Diogenes, my dear'/'bring out the best Amontillado'. Although, there's that particular beverage
showing up again....

Its been awhile since I read a Pendergast book, I'm ashamed to say. I liked Relic and a few others. Has any sane member of Pendergast's family been
shown? Cause needless to say, a fascination with bizarre, brutal murders is not an indication of sanity in my book. But then, sanity is rather overrated.

As is maturity.
A sane member of Pendergast's family? Thats a contridiction of terms! There aren't any alive, anyway.
I refuse to answer that question on grounds that I don't know the answer.

I'd like to know more about:
1. his marriage to Helen -- she HAS to have been an interesting woman to have captured Pendergast. 2. his parents -- that seems like it could be a very interesting story. 3. as a personal aside, next to Pendie, my favorite characters are D'Agosta (yeah, Vinnie!!!!) and the lovely, no-nonsense Laura Hayward. Great side characters, and both compliement Pendergast really well. 4. Aunt Cornelia is extremely interesting; I love whenever she is brought into the stories. A great malevolent character. How EVER did Pendergast turn out to be such a good person? Now there's food for thought... . He has such a keen sense of responsibility and integrity. I really like that about him. |

Reading all these posts... and making comments out of order, so please bear with me.
1. Love the idea of Pendie on a motorcycle -- the man is a constant surprise. I can see it! 2. Have to admit, I never saw anything much (of a romantic nature) between Pendergast and Margo, but that could be because I like Relic and Reliquary okay, but like the rest of the of the Pendergast novels much better... so maybe I missed something along the way. I often wonder about the sort of woman Pendergast would like. Based on the limited info we have, it would seem he'd like a strong, resilient, capable woman -- as his wife may have been and perhaps Margo as well. But I sort of would like to see him with a softer sort, a more intelligent, perhaps innocent sort (not Constance, please! 3. I would love to see future books set in New Orleans and perhaps one in San Francisco... but especially NO. I love that city, and it has always had a spooky character to it... Any vampires in Pendergast's future? Hey, before you laugh, we've had Zombiis... maybe a vampire type killer? I'm not a huge fan of vampire fiction, truthfully; but I think P&C could have fun with it. Thanks to P&C for keeping me so entertained and for creating the compelling Pendergast! |

A sane member of Pendergast's family? Thats a contridiction of terms! I have a theory that there's some obscure branch of the Pendergast family that's completely determined to beat the family curse, and has devoted all of their time and energy to being as normal and sane as possible and pretending that they're not related to anyone crazy. Francie wrote:Well, the two points above got me going... I'm from New Orleans, and would love to see how P/C handle a storyline set here, because it is so so hard to do it right. Too many writers/filmmakers fall into using cliched images or outright wrong takes on New Orleans (e.g., that movie where Dennis Quaid played a NO detective, yet they had him speaking with this awful faux-Cajun accent and hanging out 'down da bayou'...not very New Orleans...). Anyway, I would like to see Pendy on his home turf--what kind of digs does he inhabit in NOLA? Does he walk the halls of an old and spooky looking Garden District mansion (like where Anne Rice's vampires live)? or a hip condo in the Warehouse Distsrict? In any case, even if we don't get a story set down here, I'm curious to learn more about his NOLA connections. |

Perhaps Cornelia dies and Pendergast is named executor of her estate and he has to go to New Orleans to straighten out her affairs. I too would like to see him
on his home turf.(Of course he would take Vincent with him for company)

I so agree about the Dennis Quaid remarks posted above!
When I think of Pendergast's melodious southern accent, it doesn't sound like a good ole' home boy to me, but a distinguished, elegant inflection of vowels and a softness on the consonents. I love the South! Can ya tell? LOL. And yes, Vinnie would have to visit NOLA as well. Next to Pendergast, Vincent is my favorite. Such a GOOD GUY. I love him. The idea of the Garden District posted above is great as well... I mean truly... I could certainly see Pendergast in the Garden District. (I admit to being a fan of Rice's one book, "The Witching Hour," and having visited NOLA several times, I'm always struck by that book. NOLA is such a wonderful place and full of character. One of my great memories is my first trip to NOLA -- I literally "ate" my way through New Orleans -- so many fine restaurants. Truly a great place to have the gourmand Pendergast come from. |

I like to imagine Pendergast residing in the lovely Coe House on St Charles Avenue...(In Dance of Death there was mention that he owned a townhouse in NOLA...I
would've thought it be a mansion, or plantation ... : / ) Such a beautiful house. Here's an image of it: The Coe House (or any other lovely NOLA townhouse for that matter. ^^)
Rene Auberjonois does a quaint southern accent in the audio version of Brimstone. You can hear the sample here. I've heard better, but it's funny. ^^ ------------------------------- Pendergast looked searchingly at Margo for a long moment. "I need you..." -- Relic --------------------------------- |

I too would like to see him on his home turf. And yes, Vinnie would have to visit NOLA as well. I've been daydreaming about this. I've never been to New Orleans, but I've always wanted to visit. Everyone I know who's been there makes it sound so amazing. When I think of Pendergast's melodious southern accent, it doesn't sound like a good ole' home boy to me, but a distinguished, elegant inflection of vowels and a softness on the consonents. It's so hard for me to hear this in my head--the closest thing I normally hear that's anything near to a Southern accent is the redneck voice, so I can only imagine his voice as being something close to Vivien Leigh as Blanche DuBois, or just without the accent. (A friend of mine once compared the way he imagined Pendergast speaking to the way Billy Graham spoke, but...I really, really can't imagine that either.) ETA: Thank you for linking that, silverwraith! (omg, it is Odo narrating! and also one of my favorite scenes ever Le cadavre exquis boira le vin nouveau. The exquisite corpse will drink the new wine.

Odo's voice just doesn't work for me for Pendergast. It's far too gravely, not smooth and buttery like Pendergast's is supposed to be. At least
to my ear. Even as D'Agosta, the inflection wasn't the same as how it sounded in my head. (The clip I listened to was from Cemetery Dance.)
I imagine that Pendergast's normal way of speaking doesn't reflect a really strong accent, probably just certain inflections on the vowels, and a more relaxed rhythm. But apparently he can really turn it up when the situation calls for it! I love that.

I like that voice for Pendergast. There was also that audio version of the authors "interview" wih Pendergast--I can't seem to locate it at the
moment--that has an accent I like.
I refuse to answer that question on grounds that I don't know the answer.
